“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.”
Thornton Wilder
“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”
Marcel Proust
On Monday we celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving which is an annual Canadian holiday, occurring on the second Monday in October. It celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated as an annual holiday in Canada since November 6, 1879, when Parliament declared a national day of thanksgiving. The day provides us a chance to pause for thought about all the good things in our lives for which we grateful.
And how our lives have changed! The twins are now almost 6 months old and Sebastian has sprouted his first 2 teeth - and finally some wispy blonde hair. They have brought joy and laughter in to our household again and siblings for Cameron who is an exceptional big brother. They are healthy, plump, exceptionally easy-going, sleeping and eating very well. Madeleine has been sleeping through the night since 7 weeks...Sebastian, who was over a pound lighter than Madeleine on birth, is now heavier because he is snatching a couple more midnight snacks! They have been so happy and placid throughout and I am simply loving the joys of the twin experience. It has been such a privilege to wallow in the heady wonders of the early years again.
Here are a few photos of our family. The first is of Erin, taken when she was the same age as the twins are now. Madeleine, although she doesn't have Erin's extensive head of hair or her eyes, has so many characteristics of Erin. I think Erin has returned in the guise of Madeleine! You can see a more extensive collection of our family in the summer holiday photos to LA, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and with our dear Idaho families here
We are still unpacking the last of our boxes from our move, and have resurrected all the children's early years toys that I'd stashed away for my much wished-for third child. Thomas the Tank Engine and friends will be re-birthed and Erin's dressing-up box clothes will be paraded by our new daughter. As we enter the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, we reflect on what we have, rather than on what we had and have lost. There is so much to be thankful for - food in our bellies, health for all our family; well adjusted and happy children, a beautiful home, a supportive and caring community of friends surrounding us and rewarding jobs. And of course we have almost 8 years of rich memories with our beautiful daughter, Erin. She will celebrate around our Thanksgiving table, too, as she is with us in all we do. There is much for which to be thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving!
